Unwanted Hair & Hormones

Unwanted hair is quite common and occurs for both men and women.

It seems Murphy’s law is at work with respect to hair growth – we lose it where we want it, and grow it where we don’t.

The first thing to determine for a woman is if hair growth has a hormonal cause. Sometimes, imbalances in hormones can cause unwanted hair growth, as well as changes in weight, and acne, and can be associated with irregular menstrual cycles.

If hair is growing in an area that can be hormone-related in a woman, such as thick hair on the face or chest, a blood test can be done by one’s doctor to rule out hormonal causes for the hair growth.

If there is a hormonal cause for the hair growth, taking medicines to correct the imbalance can not only improve the other symptoms, but also make laser hair removal more effective.

Very rarely, laser hair removal can cause ‘paradoxical hair growth’, most commonly in people with hormone imbalances. Further laser treatments, with the treatment of the underlying hormonal issue, can resolve this rare problem.
